What is Folk Art?

Can you label yourself as a “folk artist” or is it something only given to you after they discover your work as artifacts? This is basically what I’ve been wondering for a few months since I had the thought that I am a folk artist.

Two of my hand painted terracotta pots in lavender and natural hydrangea colors.

I think I gave this way more thought than anyone cares about-- overthinking is one of my curses. There is some substance to having definitions and categories of art, but ultimately its art and shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

I love using bright colors to capture nature’s beauty and I love painting on recycled, reused, and functional items that can be passed down. It’s so exciting knowing people are actually using my pots to grow (or maybe occasionally kill, no shame) their plants and decorate their homes, or that a set of dolls will be played with for generations.

Folk art or not? Who cares? Go make something!
